Matar Pulao/Peas Pulao

Matar Pulao is mostly made with fresh peas or can be made with frozen peas. It tastes slightly sweet because of only peas as a ingredient. This is my daughter’s favourite Pulao, so I make it quite often. This Pulao can be accompanied with Punjabi gravies/Dal makhani/Kadi pakoda etc. I prefer making this Pulao in the pan (instead of pressure cooker) so that rice grain should be separated and would not look mushy.


1 cup Basmati Rice
1 medium sized Onion
1 cup fresh or frozen Peas
5-6 Cashews (Halves)
7-8 Raisins
5-6 Black pepper
5-6 Cloves
3-4 Cardamom
2 medium sized Bay leaf
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1 tbsp chopped Green chili
1½ tbsp Ghee
Salt to taste


Wash and soak Basmati rice for half an hour in regular water. Slice onion and keep aside.

On medium flame, heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds, black pepper, cardamom, bay leaf and cloves. Now add cashews and raisins and saute till they are golden in color. Now add sliced onion, green chili and saute. When onion turns translucent, add peas and saute for few seconds. Now add soaked basmati rice and stir slowly. Now add 2½ cup of hot water and salt. Mix well and cover the pan. Let it cook till rice grains are fully cooked. Serve hot with Dal, Kadi or any vegetable.
