Dal Dhokli

Simple and quick, yet healthy one dish meal. My family’s all time favourite……

Dal Dhokli

5 tbsp Moong Dal Split (unskinned)
11/2 cup Wheat flour
4 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)
1 tbsp Carom seeds
3 tsp Red chili powder
1 tsp Turmeric powder
2 tsp Coriander powder
Salt to taste
2 tbsp Chopped Coriander
1 tsp chopped Green chili

Wash moong dal and keep it aside. In a bowl, mix wheat flour, 2 tbsp ghee, carom seeds, 1 1/2 tsp red chili powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, salt and add enough lukewarm water to make tight dough. Make cylindrical roll of 1 cm diameter of the dough and cut small pieces (dhokli) by pinching it as shown in the below picture.

Dal Dhokli Process

Alternatively, roll a thick chapati and cut it into small (1*1 cm) diamond shaped pieces. In a thick bottom pan, boil 1¼ litre water and add dal into it and let it boil on low medium heat/flame. After 10 minutes, add dhokli in the dal along with remaining spices and let it boil until dal is cooked and mushy. Put ghee in the dal dhokli and give a boil. Garnish with chopped green chili, coriander, little ghee and serve it hot.

For those who love flavor of garlic, heat 1/2 tbsp ghee in a small pan. Add pinch of asafoetida, 1/4 tsp cumin seeds, chopped 3-4 cloves of garlic and sauté. Add 1/4 tsp of red chili powder and stir. Add this mixture into dal dhokli and mix well. Dal Dhokli with garlic tadka is ready.

Note: Ingredients for Garlic tadka are not included in the main ingredients list.
