Dal Palak

Ingredients

100 gm Palak (Spinach)
5 tbsp Moong dal (split and unskinned)
1 medium sized Tomato (chopped)
1 medium sized Onion (chopped)
1 1/2 tbsp Ghee
1/2 tsp grated Ginger
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
1 tsp Red chili powder
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
2 tsp Coriander powder
Salt to taste

Method:

Wash moong dal and keep it aside. Wash spinach and chop it finely. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker and put cumin seeds. Now add grated ginger and sauté. Add chopped onion and sauté. Then add washed moong dal, chopped spinach, chopped tomatoes and stir well. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt and stir well. Now add enough water (almost 1 1/2 cup) and put the lid of pressure cooker. Cook till 7-8 whistles and once the pressure cooker cools down, check the consistency and whether dal has become soft and mashed. Else add some water and boil it further till it becomes soft.

For those who love flavor of garlic, heat 1/2 tbsp ghee in a small pan. Add pinch of asafoetida, 1/4 tsp cumin seeds, chopped 3-4 cloves of garlic and sauté. Add 1/4 tsp of red chili powder and stir. Add this tadka into dal and mix well. Dal with garlic tadka is ready.

Note: Ingredients for Garlic tadka are not included in the main ingredients list.
